A washer that bangs hard enough to shake the laundry room can turn a normal wash day into a real concern. Repeated violent shaking can damage the washer, loosen connections, and leave you with a more expensive repair than the original problem.

Start With the Load Inside the Washer

The most common cause of a spin imbalance is an uneven load. During the spin cycle, the washer turns at high speed to pull water from clothing. When heavy items collect on one side of the drum, that weight pulls the machine off center.

Open the lid or door after the washer has stopped completely and redistribute the items around the drum. A single heavy item, such as a bath mat, comforter, sleeping bag, or pair of wet shoes, can be difficult for a washer to balance by itself. Add a few similar items when the care labels allow it, or wash the bulky item separately using the appropriate bulky or bedding cycle.

Avoid overloading, too. A packed washer may look efficient, but clothes cannot move freely enough to balance during the spin. On the other hand, washing one lightweight item by itself can also cause trouble. The right load size depends on the washer style, cycle, and materials being washed.

Check That the Washer Is Level and Stable

A properly working washer still needs a stable place to operate. If the appliance rocks when you press on opposite corners, it can become loud and unstable during spin.

First, make sure all four feet are firmly touching the floor. Most washers have adjustable leveling legs at the front, and some models have rear legs that set themselves when the washer is tipped forward and lowered back down. The exact adjustment depends on the model, so use the owner's manual for guidance when available.

Place a level across the top of the washer from side to side and front to back. Adjust the feet in small increments until the cabinet sits level and does not wobble. Once adjusted, tighten the locking nuts on the leveling legs if your washer has them. This keeps vibration from gradually changing the setting.

Flooring matters as well. A washer installed on a soft, uneven, or flexing floor may shake more than one on solid concrete. Thin anti-vibration pads can help reduce minor movement and noise, but they will not fix a failed suspension system or a severely uneven floor. Avoid stacking makeshift materials under the feet, such as cardboard, wood scraps, or folded towels. They can shift under load and make the problem worse.

Make Sure Shipping Materials Were Removed

This check is especially important if the washer is new, was recently moved, or began shaking immediately after installation. Many front-load washers are shipped with transit bolts that lock the drum in place for transportation. Those bolts must be removed before normal operation.

A washer run with shipping bolts installed may shake aggressively, make loud mechanical noises, and risk damage to internal components. Check the installation instructions or the back panel for the required bolts and covers. If you are unsure whether the machine was installed correctly, it is safer to have a technician inspect it than to continue running it.

Know When the Problem Is More Than an Uneven Load

If you have leveled the washer and balanced the load, but the machine still slams, rattles, or walks across the room, an internal part may be worn or broken. This is when a simple adjustment becomes a repair issue.

Common causes include worn suspension rods on a top-load washer, weak shock absorbers on a front-load washer, damaged tub springs, or a loose counterweight. These parts hold the tub steady while allowing it to move in a controlled way. When they wear out, the tub can bounce excessively and hit the cabinet during a fast spin.

A damaged drive system, worn tub bearing, or broken drum support can also create imbalance-like symptoms. You may hear a grinding, roaring, scraping, or metallic knocking sound along with the shaking. Water leaking beneath the washer, a burning smell, or a drum that feels unusually loose are additional warning signs that should not be ignored.

A Quick, Safe Drum Check

With the washer turned off and empty, gently press down on the tub or drum and release it. It should move with some resistance and settle quickly. If it bounces repeatedly, drops heavily, or feels loose, the suspension may need service.

For front-load washers, open the door and gently lift the stainless-steel drum from inside. Significant up-and-down play can point to bearing or drum support trouble. This is not a final diagnosis, but it is a useful reason to schedule a professional inspection rather than continuing to run the appliance.

Do Not Keep Restarting a Violent Spin Cycle

Modern washers often sense an off-balance load and try to redistribute it before spinning again. That is normal. But if the machine repeatedly pauses, refills, rearranges, and fails to complete the cycle, there is a reason. Forcing extra spin attempts can put more strain on the suspension, motor, and cabinet.

Stop using the washer if it is moving several inches, striking nearby walls or cabinets, leaking, or producing harsh mechanical sounds. Unplug it before looking behind or beneath the appliance. Never reach into a moving washer, bypass a lid lock, or attempt to hold the machine in place while it spins.

When to Call for Washer Repair

A homeowner can often solve a one-time imbalance by redistributing laundry or correcting a loose leveling foot. Persistent shaking is different. It usually means the washer needs a closer look before a small part failure damages the tub, floor, hoses, or nearby appliances.

A trained appliance technician can identify whether the issue comes from the installation, the floor, the suspension system, shocks, bearings, counterweights, or another internal component. That diagnosis matters because parts can produce similar symptoms but require very different repairs. Replacing the wrong part wastes time and money.
